Author Shirley Brooks-Jones to Speak at First BWC Event Co-Sponsored by the Bexley Public Library – March 6, 2012
Shirley Brooks-Jones will be the featured speaker at the first co-sponsored program that BWC has done with the Bexley Public Library on March 6, 2012.
Shirley, a Dublin, Ohio resident, happened to be on a flight back to the United States on September 11, 2001 and the plane was diverted to Gander International Airport in Newfoundland. The tiny town of Lewisporte took in nearly 800 of the stranded passengers, refusing to accept any payment. On the flight back to the U.S., Shirley came up with the idea of coming up with a scholarship fund for the children of Lewisporte. This was the beginning of the “Lewisporte Story”. The fact that Shirley’s focus is on scholarships dovetails nicely with what BWC does with our House & Garden Tour proceeds, Scholarships!
The program includes a short general business meeting at 6:30pm where we will vote on the slate of officers for 2012-13 along with a proposed constitutional change. Shirley is scheduled to speak at 7:00pm.
